Saturday 25 June from 7pm
Saturday 21 May from 7pm
an evening with
ALFRED HITCHCOCK and DAPHNE DU MAURIER
at Leytonstone Library Lecture Hall
and The Luna Lounge Jazz Bar
6 Church Lane, London E11 (adjacent Leytonstone underground and bus station)
As part of the Waltham Forest Literary and Arts Festival 2011, the McGuffin Film Society presents an evening dedicated to the Master of Suspense Alfred Hitchcock and his most prolific muse – the novelist Daphne du Maurier.
During his 50 years as a director, Hitchcock adapted many novels and plays for the big screen but it was to the writings of du Maurier that he constantly returned for inspiration.
Three of Hitchcock’s best remembered films – ‘Jamaica Inn’, ‘Rebecca’ and ‘The Birds’ – were all based on stories by du Maurier while his legendary TV series ‘Alfred Hitchcock Presents…’ also featured her work.
Although du Maurier was usually less than impressed with these cinematic interpretations of her stories, each represents a significant moment in Hitchcock’s career with ‘The Birds’ in particular now considered a landmark of 20th Century motion pictures.
Tonight we celebrate Hitchcock’s connections to Waltham Forest along with the enduring contribution made by Daphne du Maurier to his work.
7pm: ‘ALFRED HITCHCOCK IN EAST LONDON’
Admission free.
65-minute documentary exploring the legendary director’s mysterious early years which uncovers many lesser known facts about his formative days.
Retracing the young Alfred Hitchcock’s footsteps around Leytonstone, Limehouse, Stratford and Hackney, the film reveals how his early London life profoundly influenced his later work.
The documentary also examines Hitchcock’s associations with the long forgotten Walthamstow film industry and tells the previously untold story of his support for a Leytonstone cinema during the height of his Hollywood fame.
8.15pm: WHEN THE MASTER MET THE MISTRESS: ALFRED HITCHCOCK, DAPHNE DU MAURIER AND THE ENIGMA OF ‘THE BIRDS’
Admission £5 (includes entry to the Luna Lounge Jazz Bar – see details below). Tickets available on the door on the night or in advance from Leytonstone Library.
Alfred Hitchcock’s iconic thriller ‘The Birds’ is widely regarded as a milestone in cinema history. This event highlights the film’s relationship with Daphne du Maurier’s original short story and explores how two very different interpretations emerged from one nightmare vision.
‘When The Master Met The Mistress’ commences with a live theatrical rehearsed reading based on du Maurier’s classic tale of suspense. Set on the shores of the English coast during the Cold War, this version of ‘The Birds’ centres around farm worker Nat Hocken and his family as they encounter a series of seemingly random bird attacks around their village. However, it soon transpires the attacks are more widespread than initially suspected and what begins as a minor local difficulty could ultimately have worldwide implications…
This performance will be followed by a screening of Hitchcock’s 1963 Hollywood masterpiece ‘The Birds’ which reimagined du Maurier’s mystery in smalltown America. Tippi Hedren plays San Francisco socialite Melanie Daniels who travels to a remote Californian bay in pursuit of the eligible Rod Taylor. Her arrival coincides with an inexplicable outbreak of bird attacks on the local population and it is not long before the finger of blame points to the glamorous stranger in their midst…
‘When The Master Met The Mistress’ will be followed by a live appearance from jazz group Splatter performing alongside clips, trailers and ‘magic moments’ from the career of Alfred Hitchcock. Featuring a special guest appearance by former Stranglers star John Ellis.
NOTE: The performance by Splatter will take place in the Luna Lounge Jazz Bar (beneath Leytonstone Library) – please show your ticket from the main Hitchcock event to gain admission.
CLOSE: MIDNIGHT.
SPECIAL OFFER: Hitchcock ticketholders will also receive a generous discount on all meals purchased on 21 May at the following establishments: Star of India restaurant, Chopsticks restaurant, Meze, Horizon, San Marino Cafe and Sunway Cafe.
